New evaluation metrics

Researchers, universities, research funders and policymakers plus other research performing organizations are revisiting their own approach to research assessment; the main scope is to develop and implement a more accurate, transparent and responsible research evaluation.

The framework represented clarifies that metrics are approximations and not a direct measure of research quality.

The categorization in the table is not a sort of ranking of the reliability of the different metric types. It does not imply that usage-based and alternative metrics are inherently improved or more responsible than the conventional ones.

The right balance between qualitative and quantitative approaches or the design and use of metrics has still to be found.

More in depths are available in the EUA (European Universities Association) briefing paper (April 4, 2019).
